Welcome Back!

Welcome to another school year! I hope you have all had a wonderful summer and that you’re ready for an exciting year of music-making. This year, for our music courses that fall outside the timetable (senior band, choir, and jazz band), there will be a new schedule. Unlike previous years, those classes will no longer follow the day 1/day 2 rotation, and instead, we will have them on set days. Please see the schedule below:

Senior Band: Monday & Thursday 7:15am

Choir: Tuesday & Friday 7:15am

Jazz Band: Monday 3:15pm-4:30pm; Wednesday 7:15am

Please note that Jazz Band will begin next Monday, September 9th. Senior Band and Choir will both begin this week. Junior Band (gr.8/9) has remained in the timetable.

Important Dates

May 1 – Junior Band members rehearsing with Senior Band 8:15am

  • Choir students at Derby Manor 10:30-11:30am (missing period 6. Dress is black bottoms, solid-coloured top)

May 7 – No Senior Band in the morning (majority of students away on SFU field trip)

May 8 – Jazz Band rehearsal at lunch

May 9 – Music Council event: MOVIE NIGHT in the band room 7:00pm-9:30pm. Admission $3.

May 15 – Jazz Band rehearsal at lunch

May 23 – Choir students at 2nd Street and Armstrong Elementary Schools 10:30am-1:45pm (missing periods 6&7. Dress is all-black)

May 27 – SCHOOL LEAVING CEREMONY (Choir only performing)

  • 4pm Sound-check at Bill Copeland Arena. Performance should be done by 8:30pm
  • Dress is formal all-black
  • Students are responsible for transportation to the arena
  • Pizza dinner will be served after sound-check


  • Set-up will be after school (mandatory for all students)
  • Cariboo Hill Small Gym
  • Students arrive & doors open 6:30pm
  • Admission by donation
  • Student dress is all-black

June 11 – SWING INTO SUMMER (Jazz Night)

  • Set-up after school (mandatory for all performers)
  • Cariboo Hill cafeteria,
  • Doors open 6:30pm
  • Early bird tickets $7 or $10 at the door. Includes coffee, tea, dessert
  • Student dress is formal

Fine Arts Night – February 7

Fine Arts Night is taking place Thursday, February 7 at Cariboo in the small gym. Doors will open at 6:30pm. This annual event is a celebration of Cariboo Hill’s thriving Visual & Performing Arts programs, and this year will feature an art auction and 50/50 draw. Friends and family are encouraged to attend, and donations at the door will be gratefully accepted. Details of the event are as follows:

Wednesday, February 6
Period 1 – Junior Band to set-up music equipment in gym
Period 4 – Senior Band rehearsal in small gym with dancers
After school – all performers in the small gym for table/chair/decoration set-up, followed by a cue-to-cue rehearsal

Thursday, February 7
Arrive at Cariboo music room by 6:30pm
Show begins promptly at 7pm, and usually runs for about 2 hours
Dress is all-black

District Concert Band Night – next Wednesday!

The Burnaby School Distirct’s annual District Concert Band Night is next Wednesday, January 16 at 7pm. This evening will include all the Senior Concert Bands from the district’s 8 high schools. Family and friends are more than welcome to attend this event.

Time: arrive no later than 6:30pm. Concert begins at 7pm, and usually runs 2.5 hours
Location: Michael J. Fox Theatre (7373 Macpherson Ave)
Dress: all-black
Tickets: sold at the door for $5 each. Performers do not require a ticket.

Choir Performance – December 8

We have been invited by Peter Julian, MP to sing at his annual open house on December 8, 2018. This event is open for all Burnaby/New West residents. Please note the following details:

Date: Saturday Dec 8, 2018
Time: 2:00 to 4:00pm. Choir students are asked to be there by 2:30pm, as we perform 3:15 – 3:30pm.
Location: Fraser River Middle School
Address: 800 Queens Ave, New Westminster (Corner of 8th Street and Queens Ave)
Parking: Parking lots are reserved for seniors and people with disabilities. Please use street parking.

Performance at Cariboo Hill Remembrance Day Assembly
Friday, November 9 in the large gym
Students will be dismissed from their period 2 class at 10:00am for a soundcheck. Assembly begins at 10:45am.
Family members are welcome to attend.

Saturday, November 10
Please arrive no later than 12:30pm. Performance begins promptly at 1:00pm

Voices 41
Every year, all the secondary school choirs in Burnaby get together to perform for each other. This concert takes place at the Michael J Fox Theatre (7373 Macpherson Ave).
Monday, November 26, 2018
Please arrive no later than 6:15pm. Performance begins at 7:00pm and usually runs for about 2 hours.
Each choir gets a very limited number of tickets available for family members. We only have 10 tickets available for purchase now ($5 each). There will no tickets sold at the door. 
Dress is all black

Timberline Ranch

  • Students will be dismissed from period 2 on Wednesday, Oct. 24 at 11:45am. The bus leaves at 12:15
  • Please remember your sleeping bag, pillow, towel, and personal toiletries.
  • It looks like it will be quite rainy this year. As most of our activity rotations happen outside, students should be prepared to do activities in the rain!
  • If parents need to reach their child while at Timberline, please call the camp directly at 604-463-9278
